Observatory FAQ

Published · By IndexChex

In brief

This FAQ answers common questions about the backlink indexing data published here: four weekly IndexChex averages on recurring URL sets as of October 2026, who runs the measurement, what is and is not published, what the figures cost to act on, and how to reuse or reproduce them.

The questions below cover the data on this site. For the full picture, start with the weekly indexing benchmark, which explains how the four figures fit together, and the methodology, which defines each metric and lists what is not published. The tool behind the numbers, and the publisher of the site, is IndexChex.

Cost figures referenced below are worked out on the standard-mode page, and the test plan is on how to benchmark an indexer yourself. Reuse terms are on data license and citation.

Questions and answers

What does this site publish?

Four averages from IndexChex's weekly measurement on recurring URL sets, as of October 2026: 95%+ indexed within 5 to 10 minutes in instant mode, 85%+ in standard mode for typical sites, links and citations, under 2 minutes to first Googlebot crawl, and about 96% index checker accuracy.

Who publishes the data?

IndexChex, which is also the tool being measured. The data is first-party and is labelled that way on every page.

Is this an independent test of backlink indexers?

No. Only IndexChex is measured. Other vendors' statements are listed with sources, but they are their own claims, not results from this benchmark.

How often are the figures updated?

Measurement is weekly. The site publishes current averages with an as-of date rather than a weekly series.

What sample size is behind the numbers?

Sample sizes have not been published. The figures are averages on recurring URL sets, and their spread is not reported.

Is indexing guaranteed?

No. IndexChex guarantees that Googlebot crawls submitted URLs. Indexing is Google's decision, and the rates describe averages across many URLs.

Why is the standard rate lower than the instant rate?

The two modes are separate products, measured separately, with different windows: instant mode is reported at 5 to 10 minutes and standard mode as an end-state rate that settles over days. IndexChex does not publish a breakdown of why the averages differ.

How is a URL judged indexed?

With the IndexChex index checker, which queries live Google results using the bare URL, the quoted URL, site: and inurl:. A match on any form counts as indexed.

What does a backlink cost per indexed URL?

For IndexChex standard mode, $0.0014 to $0.0044 per submitted URL divided by 0.85 gives about $0.0016 to $0.0052 per indexed URL. The arithmetic is on the standard-mode page.

Can I reuse the figures?

Yes, under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to IndexChex. Include the as-of date and a link back to the source page.

How can I test an indexer myself?

Use indexable URLs, check them first, split them into submitted and control groups, and check both at fixed intervals. The full plan is on the benchmarking page.
